Hambantota

Location

Where the heck is “Hambantota”?! It is in the Southern Providence of Sri Lanka around 230km or a slow and somewhat terrifying 5-hour drive from Colombo. The area had been undergoing significant development until recently, following a change of government the proposed funding to the region was reduced. There is a brand new international airport and number of smooth new roads around Hambantota. It is very close to a number of famous landmarks making it an ideal base for travel around the region.

Accommodation

We stayed in Hambantota at the Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort and Spa. You can read our in-depth review here!

We were guests of Shangri-La for the first two nights. We stayed in their massive Ocean Front Suites. I can honestly say the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The price was unbelievable value and we loved the resort so much we ended up extending our stay for a further 3 nights. The kids did not want to leave. It is very much family friendly. It was divided into two main blocks. One was very much family orientated with a kids club for 3 different age groups. There was a games room for all ages and it was near the kid’s pools. The other side of the resort was quieter and was for solo travellers, couples or honeymooners.

Weather

The weather patterns are somewhat complicated in Sri Lanka; with 2 monsoonal seasons and 2 inter-monsoonal seasons! The area including Hambantota is relatively consistent with a mild all year round temperature of around 25 (22-30°C). It is within the ‘dry zone of Sri Lanka, an arid zone so you get limited rain.  You may experience some wet days during the North-Eastern Monsoon (Nov-Jan).

The weather can have an impact if you wish to travel to Yala National Park, and you should! If the weather is unfavourable for the animals welfare they will completely close the park. The dates can vary each year but it is often September-October.
